Updates

We got Chuckie and Pie out of the cage the other day because we wanted to start hand training them and needed some pictures for the adoption site. Chuckie ended up spending most of the time happily perched on my shoulder. Pie was pretty unfriendly at first but started to warm up a bit after a while. They are pretty food motivated  and love seed so they will be pretty trainable I think. We had them both on the table and both apparently think they can still fly, cause they both launched themselves off the end of the table only to land unceremoniously on the ground at one point.     Both birds are doing fabulous on the diet transition. They are eating mostly chop and pellets with just a little seed. Both birds are starting to appear much stronger and healthier as a result. Pie is even starting to get a couple feathers back on her head. I am not sure how many will come back but some is better than none

Field Trip

Chuckie and Pie went on a little adventure today and helped PEARL out at an event. We joined PEARL members Jake and Kim at the Carnegie Museum's Super Science Saturdays event. It was all about pets and specifically rescue animals. There were also Kittens and rabbits in attendance today. Chuckie and Pie did outstanding at the event and brought a lot of people over to the table.

Diet Transition

Chuck and Pie have been here about 2 weeks and their diet transition seems to be going very well. When they first arrived there were on a primarily seed diet and seemed to show little interest in changing that. Jen really got the ball rolling by getting them to try a few different things. Now their diet is primarily Zupreem Fruit Blend and chop. The chop for the next few days consists of cabbage, mixed leafy salad greens, kale, celery, green and yellow pepper, carrot, alfalfa hay, corn, nuts and strawberries. They also get a small amount of seed and some Tops pellets. Every day they eat more and more the mix. They really seem to like this mixture.  Of course the seed goes first but they are eating a great deal of the chop. They are doing much better at transitioning than my parakeets which have threatened to move out should this chop experiment continue...

Meet Chuckie and Pie

Image
Hello and welcome to my blog about fostering 2 cockatiels named Chuckie and Pie. They are brother and sister and have been together their entire lives so will need to be adopted together. Chuckie, on the left is the male and Pie, right, is the female.      Both birds came to me about a week or so ago and came from a the home of a former breeder and while they were probably loved they probably didn't receive the best care. They were on a primarily seed diet and were not caged properly. Both birds have had a section of their right wing either amputated or severely damaged so sadly neither will ever be able to fly. Pie suffers from over preening from Chuckie and her much of her head is devoid of feathers. Both suffer from perching problems which may be the result of a bad diet so hopefully better foods will allow these guys to get a little better.    My primary goal for these fosters is get them a little healthier and eating better food. They do seem to be trying some of the
